Police raid the largest slum in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - units assisted police elite military vehicles and helicopters raided the location of the largest squatter here by yesterday morning.

Large-scale raid on the location of Rocinha slum here is part of a police campaign to suppress the drug syndicates that dominated the area over the decades.

Location Rocinha consisting of 1,000 squatter settlements occupied by one-third of the six million people in this city.

Brazilian authorities previously vowed to continue fighting crime to operate to make this city safe before it is to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

"Rocinha is the most strategic areas for the police control here," said a security consultant Brazil, Paulo Storani.

"Having Rocinha means the authorities can guarantee security in the environment where the Olympic Games and World Cup will take place," he said.


These efforts paid off when the police managed to arrest the most wanted drug smugglers here, Antonio Lopes Bonfim.
